Eco-justice Ethiopia plans to grow its influence in the Horn of Africa and the whole continent in due time. Having this vision in sight, the organization plans to produce regular platforms including, annual international conferences specialized in dealing with legal dimensions of environmental, ecosystem, climate, and natural resources justice.
At the moment Eco-justice Ethiopia is a UNEP-accredited organization that is following multilateral environmental agreements. We are also a member of the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), A partner to Natural Justice (Lawyers for Communities and the Environment) in Ethiopia, and an active member of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives - Africa (GAIA-Africa). Through these partnerships and collaborations, we are furthering the cause for environmental justice at the continental and global level. Please visit our activities page here to learn more.
Eco-Justice Ethiopia plans to undertake researches focused on the legal dimensions of the environment, climate, ecosystem, and natural resources management. Furthermore, it provides on demand consultative services to diverse stakeholders.
The notion of environmental justice, in part reflecting its roots in a social movement, has been subject to low interrogation and definitional precision. The way in which it has been deployed has been more of an instinctive reaction, than as a closely argued concept. Hence, these researches will be geared towards supplying substantive bases for all other core activities of our organization. As part of the research activities, Eco-Justice Ethiopia will conduct preliminary surveys (baseline surveys), study institutional responses among other topics on environment, climate, ecosystems and natural resources, with the purpose of examining present ground conditions and point ways forward. For what’s more, these researches will be serving as baseline surveys and needed assessments that will be used at an initial step. Following researches, a workshop will be conducted to communicate findings to various stakeholders and potential partners that will be joining in implementing the recommendations.
Ethiopia has a predominantly young population with the median age of just 19.5. Hence, the organization plans to focus on the youth in order to nurture an eco-friendly mind set for the future decision makers. According to UN-Women, girls and women in Ethiopia are found to be disadvantaged in several grounds, including their basic livelihood and human rights protections. When human beings unsustainable exploitation impacts the climate, specific natural resources, or the general environment, women are at the forefront to bear the repercussions. That's why our organization envisions assisting women, youth, as well as student organizations to be set up and assist in raising awareness on environmental concerns.

We envision an environmentally conscious society that recognizes its rights to live in a clean and healthy environment as well as its responsibility to protect it. We envisage a just legal system that defends nature, combats climate change and fights for a healthy environment for all.
The organization plans to prepare training manuals and organize trainings for at least one city per year, on environmental rights and responsibilities. The target groups for the training will be individuals from members of the general public and for those working as zonal desk officers, judges, public prosecutors, environment protectors and land administration experts.
With regard to promotional activities, visits will be made to federal, regional, inter-governmental, local administrations, universities, and other relevant institutions. Such activities are aimed at:
A national workshop related to this will accordingly be organized. In such workshops, presentations and explanations will be provided in view of increasing awareness and enhancing the support and active participation-of the stakeholders as primary actors and implementers of our organization’s activities.
This component is mainly designed to raise the awareness as well as build capacity of government officials-Wereda, Zone, town, Regional and Federal levels, judges and prosecutors, land administration personnel, natural resources management personnel, and the wider mass, about the impacts of environmental degradation, deforestation, industrial pollution, waste and climate change. This fraction of the organization also focuses on assisting individuals whose rights to a clean environment and access to natural resources have been affected. Under this component, trainings, workshops, seminars, counsels and representation, and experience sharing are the core activities that will be undertaken.
One of our main missions is Supporting public interest litigation initiated and carried out by the organization itself, or other partners. Our advocacy and promotional unit that has the purpose of offering legal aid, consultancy and legal representations for issues related to the environment and natural resources. Eco-Justice Ethiopia plans to bring environmental laws to courts all over the country. So far judicial interpretation and application of these laws are slim to none in most parts of the country.
