As we approach the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Eco-justice Ethiopia calls for bold and decisive action to address the climate crisis.
Climate change is an existential threat to our planet and its inhabitants. We are already witnessing the devastating impacts of climate change, with more extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to ecosystems. These impacts are disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable communities, particularly in developing countries like Ethiopia.
COP28 is a critical opportunity to accelerate global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to the impacts of climate change. We must seize this opportunity to transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future for all.
Key priorities for COP28:
Rapid and deep emissions reductions: We need to peak global emissions by 2025 and achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Enhanced climate finance: Developed countries must fulfill their promise to provide $100 billion per year in climate finance to developing countries. This funding is essential for supporting climate action in vulnerable countries.
Adaptation and resilience: We need to invest in adaptation measures to protect communities from the impacts of climate change. This includes building resilient infrastructure, developing early warning systems, and supporting climate-resilient livelihoods.
Loss and damage: We need to address the issue of loss and damage, which refers to the irreversible impacts of climate change that cannot be avoided or adapted to. This includes providing financial support to countries that are already experiencing loss and damage.
Eco-justice Ethiopia is committed to working with our partners to ensure that COP28 delivers a just and equitable outcome for all.
