On July 23, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered a landmark Advisory Opinion affirming that states have binding legal obligations under international law to prevent climate harm.
At Eco-Justice Ethiopia, we welcome this milestone decision as a powerful tool in the fight for climate justice across Africa. The Court underscored that failure to act on climate change is not only unjust, it is unlawful.
Key legal obligations clarified:
Prevent and redress harm from greenhouse gas emissions.
Protect the rights of present and future generations.
Support vulnerable states through finance, cooperation, and technology.
Regulate private actors contributing to climate damage.
For Ethiopia and many African nations already facing intensified droughts, food insecurity, and displacement, this ruling reinforces the urgency of climate accountability rooted in equity.
As we prepare for the Africa Climate Summit 2 (ACS2) and beyond, we urge negotiators, institutions, and civil society to center this ruling in their commitments and strategies. Justice must be more than a promise, it is now a legal imperative.
