Eco-Justice Ethiopia Teams Up with EPA to Tackle Pollution Challenges
Eco-Justice Ethiopia is proud to have partnered with the FDRE Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to organize the first day of a two-day National Seminar on Beating Environmental Pollution (Plastic, Water, and Air). Held at the Skylight Hotel, the seminar brought together key stakeholders to explore mechanisms and strategies for building a waste-free and environmentally friendly Ethiopia.
Shining a Light on Waste Pickers and Plastic Pollution
The first day of the seminar kicked off with the launch of Eco-justice Ethiopia's powerful documentary, "Beyond the Trash". This film sheds light on the lives of Addis Ababa's informal waste pickers, highlighting their crucial role in the city's waste management system and their daily strugles.
Moving Beyond: A Call for Systemic Change
Following the documentary, Eskedar Awgichew delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled "The Inequalities Of Plastic Pollution". He emphasized the importance of adopting a zero-waste hierarchy and transitioning away from the current extractive economic model. His presentation underscored the need to recognize and support informal waste pickers, advocate for reduced single-use plastics, and highlighted the crucial roles of both government and CSOs in achieving these goals.
National Plastic Waste Management Strategy: A Roadmap for the Future
Dr. Ayele Hagena, Advisor at the EPA, then presented the National Plastic Waste Management Strategy and roadmap, outlining its implementation plan from 2024 to 2034.
Engaging in Dialogue: A Panel Discussion
The morning session concluded with a lively panel discussion moderated by Firew K. Mekonnen featuring a diverse range of stakeholders. Important questions were raised regarding the formalization of informal waste pickers, exploring alternatives to plastic, addressing the role of women and vulnerable people in environmental justice, and fostering stronger market linkages between waste pickers, buyers, and recyclers.
Tackling Water Pollution Challenges
The afternoon session commenced with a powerful presentation by Dr. Taye Alemayehu (Lecturer, Researcher, and Consultant at EIWR AAU) titled "Mitigating water pollution: Uncovering causes, Assessing Impacts, and Exploring Effective Solutions". a stark picture of the alarming levels of water pollution currently affecting Ethiopia. He shared shocking examples, such as the necessity for herders to use tethers to prevent their cattle from drinking from dangerously polluted rivers.
Preserving Wetlands: A Call for Restoration
The final presentation of the day was delivered by Mr. Solomon Haileyesus, from MoWE focused on "Preserving Wetlands: Combating Pollution and Restoring Ecosystem Health".
