Eco-Justice Ethiopia is on site at the Bonn Climate Conference, closely following the negotiations that impact our communities back home. What we’re witnessing is deeply concerning; important climate discussions are moving far too slowly given the gravity of the crisis we face.
From the first day, progress has been delayed due to disagreements over the agenda. While negotiators are locked in procedural debates, the reality on the ground in Ethiopia and across Africa is stark: communities are already suffering from floods, landslides, droughts, and food insecurity driven by climate change.
Together with our allies partners, we are calling for:
-Grant-based and reliable adaptation financing
- Immediate operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund
- A just transition grounded in Africa’s context and realities, not a copy-paste model
- Protection from exploitative carbon markets
Africa’s energy transition must not replicate the injustice of the fossil fuel era. A one-size-fits-all approach risks deepening inequalities and stalling development. We call for a just transition that:
Respects Africa’s right to energy access, industrial growth, and local value addition
Prioritizes grants over loans, especially for LDCs like Ethiopia
Invests in renewable energy, skills, and decentralised systems that benefit people, not just markets
This is about equity, dignity, and transformation; not just mitigation metrics.
We urge negotiators to stop dragging their feet and commit to real, context-specific climate justice. Africa is not a testing ground; it is a rising voice demanding fairness and urgency.
